Happy Valentines Day Weekend! I wanted to throw in a bonus post for y’all as we celebrate a day all about love because God loves you more than you can even imagine. Think of your greatest love you may be celebrating this weekend, He loves you more than that, more than any of our earthly love relationships. So much that our relationships are nothing in comparison to the love He has for US! Isn’t that just incredible?!
I wanted to share in this with you. Did you know that God IS love?! 1 John 4:16 tells us so. When we experience love, we are experiencing God. God gave us the ability to love. In fact scripture tells us that we know how to love because He loved us first. And not only that, but his love is pure, unconditional, nothing can separate us from His love, He simply loves us and His love is ours to have forever.
Let’s look at a “classic” love Bible verse you may be familiar with… Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 That is what the Bible tells us love is.
As we read earlier that God IS love. Knowing that, this scripture actually takes on a whole new perspective. Since God IS love, look what happens when we replace “love” with “God”… God is patient, God is kind. He does not envy, He does not boast, He is not proud. He does not dishonor others, He is not self-seeking, He is not easily angered, He keeps no record of wrongs. God does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. He always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. If you want to know how much God loves you, it’s right here in scripture, wrapped with a big bow on it, ready to be given to you, to all of us, today and every day. Even when we mess up, His love remains the same. His love never wavers from this scripture, this is it, in full, always. There is no greater love than the one He freely gives us.
Will you go into this a little deeper with me? Our application tells us, “the more we become like Christ, the more love we will show to others.” And just like God loves us, we are to love one another, because as we know love comes from God. We are going to take that same scripture one last time, stay with me, and this time change “love” to your name… Your name is patient, your name is kind. I do not envy, I do not boast, I am not proud. I do not dishonor others, I am not self-seeking, I am not easily angered, I keep no record of wrongs. Your name does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. I always protect, always trust, always hope, always persevere.
And that is how God wants us to love others, the way He loves us. So, what if this Valentine’s Day, and every day there after, we embraced His love and tried to love a little more like God, yes, even the ones that may not feel so lovable. Because can you imagine if we all tried to love like God loves us, even just a little… what a difference it would be in this world. And if we are loving others better, people are experiencing more love, and if they are experiencing more love, they are experiencing MORE GOD!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Know that you are LOVED!
